Ultra-Low-Power Wireless Communication
Next-generation wireless IC solutions for WPAN/WBAN/WSN are developed. This research program addresses several important challenges, such as low power consumption while maintaining multi-channel communication capability, compliance to standards and regulations, high data rate with well limited bandwidth occupation (for imaging and array recording applications), symmetric transceivers (for peer-to-peer communication as needed by WSN), coexistence with other radios, high-efficiency wireless energy transfer and passive communication (for ultra-small implantable medical devices without room for battery), and sub-GHz wideband communication (for in-body high-data-rate applications).
In order to provide solutions to these challenges, new wireless techniques are developed and introduced at various levels of design hierarchy, including transceiver architectures, modulation/demodulation schemes, and designs of receiver and transmitter front-end, frequency synthesis, and baseband circuits. A MEMS-based low-power radio approach is also explored in collaboration with MEMS researchers.
